Ben’s Lighthouse: Finding Light Through Art and Empathy

Share:

We’re delighted to feature Ben’s Lighthouse and its transformative programs in our Teaching Artist roster. Led by Executive Director Francine Wheeler, this extraordinary organization uses the power of art and performance to inspire empathy, self-awareness, and connection in children and teens.

The Mission Behind the Light

Ben’s Lighthouse was born out of an unimaginable tragedy—the loss of Francine’s son, Ben, in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. Inspired by her background in theater and music, Francine created The Isle of Skoo programs, which focus on helping children “find and share their light.” Through engaging performances and interactive lessons, Ben’s Lighthouse offers young people opportunities to explore empathy, compassion, and resolution.

A Program Tailored for Connection

The Isle of Skoo is an adaptable program tailored to meet the unique needs of schools and communities. At its core, the program uses themes of empathy and understanding to motivate children to connect with their hearts and minds. Audience feedback consistently highlights the program’s impact, with many remarking on the transformative lessons participants take home—lessons that encourage kindness, compassion, and a positive approach to navigating life’s challenges.

Memorable Moments

The impact of Ben’s Lighthouse programs is beautifully reflected in the words of those they touch. One parent once shared that her child was “learning how to be a good human,” summarizing the essence of The Isle of Skoo. Another heartwarming moment came during a community holiday festival, when students crafted The Isle of Skoo out of gingerbread, adding the message: “The Isle of Skoo. Stand Tall, Shine Bright.”

Inclusivity at the Core

Inclusivity is a guiding principle of Ben’s Lighthouse. Teaching Artists undergo preparation to ensure every child feels respected and valued, regardless of their abilities or challenges. The programs address critical social-emotional topics such as bullying, anxiety, perfectionism, and making friends. Puppeteers excel in improvisation, adapting to ensure every participant is included and engaged.

Art Meets Social-Emotional Learning

The depth and adaptability of The Isle of Skoo set it apart. The program’s Teaching Artists bring a unique blend of performance and social-emotional learning expertise, delivering impactful lessons with creativity and care. Whether addressing complex emotions or encouraging community building, Ben’s Lighthouse offers a space where children can grow and thrive.
