When you meet Anthony DePoto, one thing becomes clear: his energy is boundless. As a Teaching Artist with Arts for Learning Connecticut and the founder of innerAct Theatre, Anthony has spent years shaping young minds through the transformative power of theater. His journey—from an introverted child to a dynamic educator and entrepreneur—is as inspiring as the work he brings into classrooms and workshops across Connecticut.
A Personal Journey of Growth and Discovery
Anthony’s story begins with personal transformation. As a child, he struggled with his weight and self-esteem, often turning to humor as a defense mechanism against bullying. But in his early teens, he consciously decided to change—walking daily, shedding 60 to 70 pounds, and discovering a newfound confidence. This physical and emotional shift led him to the performing arts, where he found his voice and, ultimately, his passion for education.
His early experiences in theater shaped his path. Although he only participated in one high school production—playing Max the Dog in Seussical—he recognized the power of storytelling and performance. This realization fueled his academic journey, leading him to Western Connecticut State University, where he pursued history education before switching to theater arts.
Building a Career in Theater Education
Determined to deepen his craft, Anthony pursued an MFA in acting at Minnesota State University. Entering graduate school at just 21, he was often the youngest in the room, learning alongside seasoned professionals. Minnesota State’s rigorous program, which produced 17 shows a year, prepared him for a career as a performer, mentor, and educator.
After graduating, he worked in educational programs at prestigious institutions such as Long Wharf Theatre, Hartford Stage, and the Guthrie Theater. However, he quickly realized that working within large organizations meant limited artistic freedom. With a leap of faith—and encouragement from his wife, Katie—he launched innerAct Theatre in 2013.
The Growth of innerAct Theatre
Starting with a single $1,200 contract at a Waterbury school and an adjunct teaching position at Western Connecticut State University, Anthony built innerAct Theatre from the ground up. Networking, persistence, and his passion for education helped expand his reach. In 2015, a pivotal meeting with Arts for Learning Connecticut connected him with schools across the state, allowing him to refine his teaching philosophy and impact thousands of students.
innerAct Theatre has since grown into a multifaceted organization, offering theater residencies, school workshops, and professional development programs. Anthony’s approach is process-oriented rather than product-focused, encouraging students to embrace creativity, self-expression, and personal growth through theater. He believes that the best educators remain authentic and open, sharing their experiences to connect with students on a deeper level.
Balancing Growth and Artistic Integrity
While innerAct Theatre continues to expand, Anthony faces the challenge of maintaining quality while scaling operations. His experience in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program gave him valuable insights into sustainable growth, but the key remains finding the right people who align with his educational philosophy.
Anthony’s role as an educator extends beyond Connecticut’s schools; he is also the Head of Acting at the Norwalk Conservatory and leads Professional Development sessions in corporate settings. His work in higher education and early childhood learning allows him to bridge the gap between academic instruction and hands-on theater experiences. As he puts it, the goal is “not just to train actors but to foster confidence, communication skills, and emotional intelligence in every student” he encounters.
Looking Ahead
As innerAct Theatre celebrates its 10th year, Anthony remains committed to his mission. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, self-discovery, and the arts as a vehicle for transformation. Through his work, he continues to create spaces where students of all ages can explore, grow, and express themselves—proving that theater is more than just a performance; it’s a path to self-empowerment.
